STYLE STORIES | Creating a Home Office/Homework Space

Ready to Rock it

If you are overseeing homeschooling and/or you're home working, chances are things are a little bit overwhelming right now. Add to that no real space to work and you find yourself on the sofa, kitchen table or even in bed tapping away on your laptop. Hunched up and feeling frustrated.

Here are 5 tips on creating a designated work spot to be proud of, even in the smallest of spaces,

1. Homeworking Hotspot

The good news is that desks are no longer cumbersome and unsightly. There's so many choices of styles to suit all settings. Multipurpose furniture is right on trend for 2021. Try a desk that doubles up as extra storage to really make the most of your space. These Copenhagen Desk Ladders from Dunelm are smart choices for both space saving and style.

2. Clear the Clutter

Box files, desk trays and pen pots will keep your worktop space tidy, meaning your mind feels more organised too. For filling and storage Paperchase's Kraft collection is simple yet stylish enough to form a good base. Layer with pen pots, planners and stationery to personalise, and make the most of any adjacent floor space with extra storage like Tikamoon's magazine rack.Bring your desk style in line with your room style to make it work with its surroundings.

3. Make a Memo

Sometimes we all need a reminder of what we're working towards. Add prints, pictures and inspirational quotes to the wall above your desk to keep you going when writer's block hits or a zoom call lasts just that little bit too long.

4. Serve up Softness

A desk, chair and lamp can be pretty uninviting for a full day of grafting. Bring some welcome cosiness to your set up with throws and cushions. Likewise, an area rug like this Morroccon-inspired one from West Elm, will create a physical sectioning between work and home life.

5. Calm

Working and schooling at home can be tough. When you're on your own time feels slower and it's harder to keep motivated. It's little touches to keep you going. Candles with fragrances to help you focus. A retro radio to make you feel connected to the outside world. And regular breaks away from your screen (my Bistro Tiled Monogram mug from Anthropologie makes caffeine o'clock that little bit happier).

The Take Away

Lockdown take 3 is tough but hopefully made a little bit more manageable by trying to separate out our work from home life so that neither interrupts the other (minus snack calls from the little folk during team meetings - every time, people).

By creating a dedicated space, we can step in and out of work mode as we need and want. So that we hopefully remain in a better frame of mind and mood. Well, that's the grand plan anyway.
