TRADE TIPS: Making a Modern Christmas Wreath

Updated: Aug 12, 2021

Now don't get me wrong, if you can't overindulge at Christmas, when can you?! But a little bit of natural simplicity can be welcome amongst all that excess. And with so much greenery on offer at this time of year, we're really spoilt for choice. This modern wreath is stylishly simple and can be achieved at home with a little bit of practice. Eucalyptus is a great base to work with for multiple reasons: it has a beautiful fragrance which adds a lovely fresh scent to the room. It comes in a few varieties of leaf which you can layer and angle for texture and interest. And it lasts a long time, looking just as beautiful when it dries. You Will Need: i. A metal wire hoop ii. Ribbon iii. Florist wire iv. Craft Scissors v. Fresh foliage such as Eucalyptus, Ruscus and Ivy vi. Wired artificial berries vii. Dried grasses Using floristry wire to wind around the stalks, create a base running along the bottom line of the hoop. Add in different lengths and varieties, arranging the leaves to cover the wire as you go for neatness. For softness, grasses can be bunched together at intervals along the hoop or a little shine with sprayed twigs in gold or silver. Or stick to one or the other if a more simple scheme is your thing. Wired artificial berries add little pops of interest and can be twisted into shape; allow a few to sit above and below the hoop line for balance. Finish with a bow of your preference. Whether it's jute or satin, complementary or contrasting, textiles will soften the overall look, For alternative foliage, get your wellies on and go foraging for ivy. The berried variety is in abundance at this time of year and adds real natural beauty. Mix up larger leaves with trailing ivy to for a three-dimensional effect.
